What would you do if presented with a means to bring your three defining words front & center?

From A “What If?” Dream…

Feelings felt: determination, patience, pride, hope

In nearly every group activity with new players involved, the organizers set up icebreakers. Frankly, I dread icebreakers. A particularly traumatic one involved dancing in front of everyone, while another involved sitting in the middle of a circle and sharing thoughts aloud. Thankfully, in the realm of the icebreakers, one I don’t mind frequently rears its head – the 3 Words game. Describe yourself in three words (or three phrases, or two truths and a lie, or as three ice cream flavors, etcetera)... I’ve got this one down: adventurer, researcher, problem-solver.

It’s easy because these words capture my spirit. (I suppose I could add overthinker and fastidious, but that would probably stress out the whole activity, wouldn’t it?!) My current research fellowship in the UK, including the process leading up to it, has been tapping into these traits full-force!

I was recently awarded a Fulbright, specifically a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research grant. Application, interviews, and preparation for the program took about a year, but the motivation stemmed from a need in my own classroom that has been brewing much longer. I had been facing a challenge of teaching across increasingly diverse language backgrounds and found myself mulling over a “What If? dream, which eventually led me down the road to this incredible fellowship. For my fine-print friends, read my extended post if you want All The Details!
